  1. Knew Robin as a little boy in South Bend, IN when he sat in on a writer's group his mother, Elaine Gottlieb Hemley had formed from students in her classes at IUSB. I was one of those students. I also cut Robin's hair as a kid where I worked as a stylist at Michael's Hairstyling, across from the Linebacker Inn near Notre Dame. He was brilliant as a kid–held more than his own with the rest of us. His mother later "disowned" me when I turned down her helping me get into Iowa in favor of the MFA program at Vermont College… where Robin ended up teaching! Elaine was my first mentor and biggest influence. I've tried to contact him a couple of times, but with no response, so perhaps he shares in his mom's dismissal of me… hard to tell. I really respect his writing, and hope he looks at some of mine sometime. If it helps, I don't give much credit to anything Vermont left me with so maybe I should have gone to Iowa. Too late now… His mother was brilliant. She and her late husband did the earliest translations of Isaac Bashavits Singer and she was a "pure" writer. One time, years later, I made a visit to her home in South Bend to talk writing, and I'd brought my new bride, Mary, with me and she politely suffered my introduction to her and then said since we had planned to talk about writing, Mary would have to leave us alone. Well, Mary is the most gracious person in the world and knows how valuable writing is in my life, so she did just that–left us and went to take in a movie.  Elaine and I talked writing seriously and then Mary came back a few hours later and we left. I haven't seen her since and the last I heard Robin had placed her in a nursing home in Washington somewhere near where he was then teaching. I have all of his books and they are superb. And, his mother was the single biggest influence on my writing life I've ever been privileged to have. Les Edgerton, author of 17 books, including The Rapist,The Bitch, Hooked, Just Like That, The Death of Tarpons, Monday's Meal and others.
