Dr. Brenda Dixon Gottschild’s lecture “Dance as Social Practice – Protest, Purpose, Performance” took place virtually on October 27, 2021. The African American Studies Program at the University of South Carolina hosted Dr. Brenda Dixon Gottschild for a virtual residency in late October 2021 as part of our 50th anniversary event series.

Talk Description: In contemporary society dance is most often regarded as a pleasant pastime. For dancers, choreographers, and aficionados, this art form has the potential to be a mover and shaker. Dance can carry political messages and critique social norms. Dance can move practitioners and audiences to spiritual transformation, or to advocate for social change. This presentation focuses on African American dance and its function as a messenger for equality from the mid-twentieth century through the present.

Dr. Brenda Dixon Gottschild is a Professor Emerita of Dance Studies at Temple University. She is the author of many works including “Digging the Africanist Presence in American Performance: Dance and Other Contexts”; “Waltzing in the Dark: African American Vaudeville and Race Politics in the Swing Era” (Winner of the 2001 Congress on Research in Dance Award for Outstanding Scholarly Dance Publication); and “The Black Dancing Body: A Geography from Coon to Cool” (Winner, 2004 de la Torre Bueno Prize for Scholarly Excellence in Dance Publication).
