Introduce about Trini Lopez – If I Had A Hammer / WITH LYRICS / Stereo / HD 1080p

Trinidad “Trini” López III (born 15 May 1937) is an American singer, guitarist and actor. He was born in Dallas, Texas, and grew up on Ashland Street in the Little Mexico neighborhood.
Lopez formed his first band in Wichita Falls, Texas, at the age of 15. In 1958, at the recommendation of Buddy Holly, Trini and his group “The Big Beats” went to producer Norman Petty in Clovis, New Mexico. Petty secured them to a contract with Columbia Records, which released the single “Clark’s Expedition”/”Big Boy”, both instrumental. Lopez left the group and made his first solo recording, his own composition “The Right To Rock”, for the Dallas-based Volk Records, and then signed with King Records in 1959, recording more than a dozen singles for that label, none of which charted. In late 1962, after the King contract expired, Lopez followed up on an offer by producer Snuff Garrett to join the post-Holly Crickets as vocalist. After a couple of weeks of auditions in Los Angeles that idea did not go through. He landed a steady engagement at the nightclub PJ’s, where his audience grew quickly. He was heard there by Frank Sinatra, who had started his own label, Reprise Records, and who subsequently signed Lopez.
His debut live album, Trini Lopez at PJ’s (R/RS 6093), was released in 1963. The album included a version of “If I Had a Hammer”, which reached number one in 36 countries (No. 3 in the United States) and was a radio favorite for many years. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. He also performed his own version of the traditional Mexican song “La Bamba” on the album; his recording of the tune was later re-issued as a single in 1966. Another live album from PJ’s was recorded later that same year under the title By Popular Demand More Trini Lopez at PJ’s (R/RS 6103) which contains the song “Green Green” which was written by Randy Sparks and Barry McGuire and originally recorded by The New Christy Minstrels earlier that year for their Columbia album Ramblin.

LYRICS / TRINI LOPEZ – IF I HAD A HAMMER
If I had a hammer
I’d hammer in the morning
I’d hammer in the evening
All over this land
I’d hammer out danger
I’d hammer out a warning
I’d hammer out love between
My brothers and my sisters ah-aaah
All over this land

If I had a bell
I’d ring it in the morning
I’d ring it in the evening
All over this land
I’d ring out danger
I’d ring out a warning
I’d ring out love between
My brothers and my sisters ah-aaah
All over this land.

If I had a song
I’d sing it in the morning
I’d sing it in the evening
All over this land
I’d sing out danger
I’d sing out a warning
I’d sing out love between
My brothers and my sisters ah-aaah
All over this land.

I got a hammer
And I got a bell
I got a song to sing
All over this land
It’s the hammer of justice
It’s the bell of freedom
It’s the song about love between
My brothers and my sisters
All over this land
All over this land
All over this land
All over this land
All over this land

  1. Trini Lopez was born on May 15, 1937 in northwest Dallas, Texas. His version of Peter, Paul and Mary's hit of "If I Had a Hammer." reached number #3 in 1963. Compared to Pete, Paul and Mary's version of the song, Trini's was a rock & roll version. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays in 1949.

When I was going to Rusk Jr. High in northwest Dallas, I played in the band as a drummer. During this time I became part of a band that competed in the Rusk Jr. High talent contest. We did three songs that year. They were "Wipe Out" and "If I Had a Hammer." The band was made up of Linda Kogan (vocals), Hayden Knight (Lead guitar, but also toured with Johnny Cash later on in life in his band.), Clyde Alvarez (bass guitar) and myself on drums. We won the school's talent show, Shortly afterwards we competed against all the other winners at local schools in Dallas at the Texas State Fair on the Mobile stage that was in front of Big Tex at that time. We ended up coming in third place. The contest was MC'D by the Weird Beard from a local radio station. We took the third place trophy back to Rusk Jr. High where it was placed in the trophy case.

During this time I had a friend by the name of Jo Carol Johnson (I hope I remember her name right.) who lived in northwest Dallas off Webb Chapel Road. She had a swimming pool in the backyard. She claimed that Trini Lopez's parents lived across the street. I never confirmed that, but I had no reason to question her about it. I don't know where she is today, but have fond memories of her.

Trini Lopez died on August 11, 2020 at the age of 83 from complications of the coronavirus in Palm Springs, California. We'll always remember his contribution to rock & roll like so many others during that time period.
