Galway International Arts Festival presented its winter First Thought Talks on 30 November and 1 December 2018. In this talk, author and human rights activist Ben Rawlence speaks about his experiences living with refugees in the world’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab in Kenya, as chronicled in his recent book City of Thorns.

Rawlence spent four years living and working in Dadaab, which is home to about 500,000 people. Situated on Kenya’s border with Somalia, it was established in 1992 to house 90,000 refugees from the civil war there.

Rawlence’s remarkable book City of Thorns: Nine Lives in the World’s Largest Refugee Camp, explores the lives of those he befriended and those who feel forgotten, as he takes us beyond the headlines to explore the morally urgent issue of refugees and displacement.

In this GIAF First Thought Talk, Ben is interviewed by photographer Sarah Hickson, whose exhibition Sounds Unseen: A Photographic Memoir of the Calais Sessions was presented at Galway International Arts Festival in July 2018.
