BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — Sometimes the best songs are short and sweet.

As a theme composer for NPR, BJ Leiderman has tapped into his inner Beatle for inspiration over the years.

“You gotta get your point across,” he says. “You’ve gotta come up with something that has a strong identity and that will not annoy them.”

He’s the creative force behind themes including Morning Edition and Car Talk.

Each morning for more than three decades, his name has been mentioned on the air for his catchy musical contribution.

Hard to believe, Leiderman’s greatest hits have been on heavy rotation since the 1980s, especially considering he never went gold or platinum.

Conventional wisdom is, you’ve gotta strike while the iron’s hot, but BJ isn’t so conventional.

“Makes me feel like I should have put the doggone album out 30 years ago,” he says.

The complicated composer is actually recording his debut release.

“I was just scared I guess,” BJ explains.

Surprising self doubt, considering his body of work reaches a staggering 30 million listeners per week.

Back in 1985, he knew NPR’s chief engineer. That was got him through the door.

“They said well we’re not paying him a lot let’s give him an audio credit at the end of the show,” Leiderman says.

BJ says as a lifelong Beatles fan, he was prepared for composing themes and jingles.

“If you are learning Beatles songs, you come up with a complete understanding of melody, harmony, song structure,” he says.

Along with radio themes, he’s an award-winning jingle writer. He’s become a household name, even if he’s not rock star wealthy.

“No this is NPR not HBO! I’m famous not rich,” he says. “That’s why we’re putting the album out.”

BJ figures it’s about time to cash in on national notoriety.

“I like this special conversation with the NPR audience,” BJ says. “They’re fanatical about their people and I’m one of them.”

BJ is working a rock version of his Public Radio Medley and he hopes to have his album out by Christmas.
