Introduce about If you are a person of color, you're at risk for mistaken identification by an eyewitness, #shorts
From behind the one-way mirrored glass in a dimly lit room in the precinct police station, the police detective (or line-up administrator) has just given you these instructions:
“Turn to the right, turn to the left, step forward, step backward.” This “Perry Mason-drama-filled-moment” is the opening scene in your personal nightmare: You’ve just been identified – mistakenly — in the commission of a major felony, “fingered” as the suspect and arrested. As this nightmare unfolds right in front of your very own eyes, the horror continues to play out like this: You go to trial, are subsequently wrongly convicted, and sentenced to life in prison for a crime you did not commit.
This is precisely what happened to Billy Joe Wade, Yutico Briley, Richard A. Jones and Kalif Browder, to name only a few.
Trust in the fact that this happens more often than a person may care to know.
Mistaken identifications in a criminal justice setting are a leading factor in wrongful convictions and are the leading cause of wrongful convictions in sexual assault and robbery cases. From working daily in the criminal justice system, we know that undoing a conviction is far harder than preventing it.
The National Registry of Exonerations has recorded 2,970 exonerations in the U.S. from 1989 to 2021.
In 2021, exonerees lost an average of 11.5 years of their life to wrongful imprisonment for crimes they did not commit. 1,849 years combined have been lost in a total of 161 exonerations to date this year.
