PORT ARTHUR – By Justin Hinton, KFDM NewsThe Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission has opened a Port Arthur disaster recovery housing office.Prior to this facility being here, citizens of Port Arthur and Mid County had to travel all the way to Beaumont to get those disaster recovery services, Shaun Davis, executive director of the commission said. We’re proud to say, now they won’t have to do all that travel because this facility’s here.The center will serve primarily as an appointment-based service center where applicants can discuss their specific case with their appointed caseworker.Davis says all of the disaster recovery housing services provided at the Beaumont office will be extended to the new Port Arthur location.The office sits at 3300 Memorial Boulevard, a renovation of the former fire station #6.One of the city electricians and a couple of guys from the Bureau of Prisons prison camp was (sic) helping the electrician. They rewired the whole building, and the rest of us were building walls, hanging sheetrock, ceilings, everything, said Port Arthur police officer Al Gillen.It took the workers about two and a half months to complete the renovations.Davis says its going to be a big benefit for the community.
