1. Demonstrators outside the Supreme Court
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Kate Smith/Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“I mean, we’re devastated about what happened at the court. Our court has taken away a constitutional right. It’s the first time the court has ever done that. So we are here supporting our supporters, having our voice be heard, and really just telling people we won’t go back.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Kate Smith/Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“It you don’t like what the Supreme Court just did, come out, have your voices be heard. Our biggest strength right now is our number. The majority of Americans do not agree with this decision. Eight in ten Americans believe in the legal right to abortion. That’s a fact. So if you believe that, come out, mobilize and be part of our activations to let your voice be heard. Because that’s the most powerful thing we have right now.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Kate Smith/Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“Here’s the thing, I don’t need to speculate about how things will go from here on out. 13 states, they already have trigger bans on the books. Here’s how they work. They have already laws that will make abortion illegal in the case that Roe v Wade get overturned. So given today’s news, we’re expecting 13 states will go dark at, you know, as soon as today and into next week. After that, we’re expecting another 13 states to lose access to abortion. All in we’re talking 26 states. 36 million women of reproductive age and including more people who can get pregnant, right, so we are talking a lot of people who are going to get impacted. But I have to note, Planned Parenthood stores, they are open. We’re not going back and we’re going to be there for our supporters and patients. If you can’t get an abortion in your state, we’re going to help you figure out how you can get it somewhere else.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Kate Smith/Planned Parenthood Federation of America:
“Today’s news is devastating, but we have been planning for this moment. We don’t want to let our patients think we are surprised. We are not. We have been preparing for this and we are ready for them. And we need to make sure that they know that our doors are open to them. Just because the Supreme Court has failed them, we have not and we will be there for them. The reality is there will be states that have access to abortion for now. We’re going to help them figure out how to get there because we can’t just sit back and we will not go back.”

STORYLINE:
A representative from Planned Parenthood called Friday’s Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion nationwide, “devastating,” but insisted, “we will not go back.”
Speaking outside of the Supreme Court on Friday, Kate Smith of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said the message to women is that abortion-rights organizations like hers “have been planning for this moment.”
“We don’t want to let our patients think we are surprised. We are not. We have been preparing for this and we are ready for them. And we need to make sure that they know that our doors are open to them,” Smith said.
“Just because the Supreme Court has failed them, we have not and we will be there for them,” she added.

  1. For all you that do not understand the US Constitution, specifically the10th Amendment… No where in the constitution does it talk about abortion. Federal laws are laws that are based on the US Constitution. State laws are laws based on the state. The 10th Amendment gives power to the states to make their own laws regarding issues that are not specifically protected by the US Constitution. This is where abortion comes in. Your state decides laws regarding abortion. If you do not like your abortion laws, vote out your state government. While we are on the topic, guns ARE protected by the US Constitution just like freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly are. The Supreme Court did not take your right to have an abortion away. They stated that the federal government cannot take the states' rights to make abortion laws away. See the difference? I doubt it, but I always hope so.
