Ah, the Empire State. Home of the Statue of Liberty, legendary sports dynasties, and some of the best pizza you’ll ever find. It must be a pretty awesome state to live in, right? Well, not exactly. Like any place in the good ol’ US of A, you’ll find some bad things to go along with the good.

10. TROY
We begin our journey through the worst dumps in New York in an actual dump. Well, it used to be a dump here, but they closed it down. Located along the Hudson River, Troy is a place where you will find little to do.

9. BUFFALO
Gang violence, drug addiction, and unchecked mental illnesses also seem to run at high levels here, leading to an overall toxic environment for a lot of its residents. This is the second most dangerous place in the state of New York, after all.

8. BINGHAMPTON
There’s probably not many people in New York that would be surprised to see Binghamton on this list. It really is one of the more depressing places to be in New York. In fact, if Binghamton wasn’t somewhere in the top 10, most people would start to wonder if our data was accurate.

7. SCHENECTADY
Schenectady has certainly seen better days. Once the proud home of General Electric, Schenectady is now known as yet another upstate place with little to nothing to do outside of its limited college scene.

6. UTICA
Utica, New York might be considered the city that God forgot. Along I-90 and East of Syracuse is the 17th most dangerous place in the state. That’s not that bad is it? Well, Utica earns it’s spot on this list because of its overall crummy atmosphere.

5. HERKIMER
We don’t usually pick on teeny places, but Herkimer is one of the top 5 most dangerous places in New York! Herkimer has a long list of other problems besides just crime, though. Things like low income, high unemployment, and below average schooling to name a few.

4. SYRACUSE
Love it or hate it, this gloomy Winter Wasteland and has earned the 4th spot on our list of Worst Cities in New York. It’s the 5th biggest city in the state, and has nicknames such as The Emerald City and the Heart of New York. But wow, are people here broke – much of the population here lives at or below the poverty line.

3. ALBANY
Our next stop is pretty depressing place. Located north of New York City along the western bank of the Hudson is Albany, the capital city of New York State. It’s said that sun has never shined here, not even once. That’s not fair, come on now.

2. NEWBURGH
Coming up next on this terrible tour through New York State is Newburgh, a city along the Hudson that places in the bottom third for unemployment, median income, and crime. That’s a triple whammy on this crappy city checklist!

1. NIAGARA FALLS
Coming in at number 1 on our list is Niagara Falls, the most dangerous place in New York, and quite a depressing place to live.
